Corinne’s Transformation Story
As a neuroscientist and a transformational health and life coach who has a family legacy of Alzheimer's disease and diabetes, it is my passion to live and to help others live a long and happy, brain-healthy life.
Becoming a neuroscientist
I was 14 when my grandmother was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. It was scary learning that there was no cure for this terrible disease. But I was also fascinated by how this disease was changing her behavior and I just had to understand how the brain worked.
Later, while in college, genes were all the rage and I majored in a new field called "cellular and molecular biology". So now I had to understand how our genes participate in the workings of our brain. My interests in the brain and in genes motivated me to pursue a PhD degree and become a neuroscientist.
Who knew that being a scientist was stressful?
During the time I spent almost 30 years involved in neuroscience research in top medical schools, I was very stressed much of the time and didn't take very good care of myself. By my late 40's I was borderline obese, had suffered with IBS/GERD for 25 years, endured multiple bouts of insomnia, and had frequent tension headaches and migraines, joint pain and stiffness and strange itchy rashes where I seemed sensitive to my own sweat.
A wake-up call
Life got particularly stressful and miserable one summer, and I went to the doctor. Getting diagnosed with pre-diabetes was a huge wake-up call for me. I have a strong family history of diabetes, and diabetes is a significant risk factor for Alzheimer's disease. As a neuroscientist, I knew that having pre-diabetes meant that my brain was already starting to look like an Alzheimer's brain (!)
Being a scientist, I did a lot of research to determine the best way to take care of myself. The MD had recommended 4 different diets to me- one for each subclinical lab result. The dietician recommended a fifth diet, saying I needed to eat more carbs, but could not provide a good scientific reason that made sense to me.
I came to realize that science and medicine did not have all the answers and it could be a while before it did. So, even thought the science was not solid at the time, I decided to trust my intuition and try a gluten-free diet to begin a transition to a low carb diet.
That decision changed my life.
Really! Within 3 days of going gluten-free, my headache lifted. Within a week, my joint pain and stiffness were noticeably improved and I realized that my gut felt normal, for the first time in over 25 years!! Excess weight began dropping from my body - over 20 lbs in the first month, eventually losing 47 lbs. It took more time and eliminating dairy, but the GERD and rashes also went away and I don't get migraines as frequently. To manage and reverse my pre-diabetes, I used and continue to use a blood glucose meter to determine which foods spike my blood sugar.
A new career
A couple of years later, I realized that I no longer wanted to work in such a stressful environment. I wanted to work more directly with people and see the impact of my work, and I was inspired by recent news of preventing Alzheimer's with lifestyle changes. The experience of my own empowering health transformation coupled with the excitement of supporting and inspiring others to realize their own health transformations led me to pursue health coaching as a new career and passion.
There's a saying, "Once a scientist, always a scientist". Having been a neuroscientist for 30 years has affected how I think, how I approach problems, how I gather, analyze and interpret data and more. Scientists are also very good at taking a long process and breaking it down into a logical sequence of small steps. If you are not put off by geeky science stuff (or maybe you love it, too!), I would love to put my knowledge and skills into service for you.
Master of habit change
Knowledge, while important, is not sufficient to make successful changes in lifestyle. And while willpower can be useful to get you started with your healthy habits, it is not reliable. I combine my personal experience and professional expertise with new skills in transformational coaching methods and the science of habit change so that you can create lasting habits. There’s nothing more frustrating than making progress with your health or lifestyle goals only to revert back to old patterns and lose the results of all your hard work. The science of habit change is what is missing from most health coaching programs. It’s the powerful reason why you will see the lasting results you want when you work with me.
“Working with Corinne has been a pleasure. She has so much knowledge about the brain and how the foods we eat affect our brains. One of my favorite parts of her program was when we went “shopping” together at a local Whole Foods. She taught me to read the labels on the different packaged items - things to look for that were healthy and those things that were not healthy. My eating habits have changed since I went through Corinne’s program and I have lost weight because I have substituted more healthy foods for foods with too much sugar. Thank you, Corinne Spencer." - Margaret S.
“My coach was able to help me by 1) introducing coping strategies to help reduce my stress, 2) encouraging me to try new foods that would give me energy at the right times of the day, as well as ones that would help decrease the stress hormone, cortisol, and 3) shifting my attitudes away from frustration with not sleeping, and towards gratitude about the steps I was taking to improve my situation, and enjoy living overall.
Corinne is very friendly, personable, encouraging, non-judgmental, knowledgeable about health, nutrition, and stress, motivating, and interested in her clients’ progress in their achievements, no matter how big or small. I would recommend her to anyone who is ready and willing to be open-minded, curious, and desiring of improving their lives in a healthful way.
If I looked back from the last day of this 90 day program to the first one, I would say that my health & outlook were much improved after trying the different strategies that I learnt and worked on with my coach. This program will be a benefit to all who use it!” - Kerry G.
